The Top 5 Startup Logos & What Makes Them Awesome

by: Ekaterina Timofeenko

Published on: February 20, 2017

Creating a memorable logo may be difficult. How these 5 companies managed to create awesome startup logos? Let's find out their keys to success!

One of my favourite designers in the world, Karl Lagerfeld, once said:

“Logos and branding are so important. In a big part of the world, people cannot read French or English – but are great at remembering signs.”

And that is true; nowadays we are confronted with too much information, so we try to decrease the amount of information we take in every day. However, a good logo can capture our attention and stay in our minds for a long time. That’s why a good logo is so important in the modern world. In this article, I’m going to show you 5 logos which are very successful, and I’ll explain why.

Top 5 Startup Logos & What Makes Them Awesome1. Dropbox

Dropbox is a file storage site, which has become very popular after its foundation in 2007. I think that one of the success components of this company is its logo. It has a visual clue what this website does. The colour is very pleasant to your eyes, so even if you see this logo a lot it doesn’t annoy you.

Top 5 Startup Logos & What Makes Them Awesome2. Snapchat

Snapchat is of the most successful social networks in the world. The symbol of this company is a cute little ghost. It represents the main idea of this social network. Images there are shown just for few seconds and then disappear without a possibility to see them again. The analogy with a ghost is very strong. What is even more impressive, is that the name of the company isn’t mentioned in the logo. This can be very risky, especially when your business is new. However, the widespread popularity of the social media photo sharing app makes this possible.

Top 5 Startup Logos & What Makes Them Awesome3. 42Floors

The main idea of 42Floors is to assist new businesses and startups in finding and renting office space. Again, if we look at the logo of the company we can see that it tells us what people at this company do. The number 4, which is designed as an office building, helps with that. Moreover, the whole logo looks very natural and the colours are calm, yet there are 2 “green windows” which draw our attention. I totally love it!

Drones are now very popular, so lots of companies are producing them worldwide. As a result, there are many competitors and every one of them tries to find their USP. A startup called Zipline chose another road; they’ve chosen a different positioning on the market. The mission of this company is fast drone delivery of vaccines, medicine, and blood across Rwanda. They present their product as small aeroplanes which help people. Its logo where the “Z” is formed out of 2 paper planes depicts their positioning statement.

Top 5 Startup Logos & What Makes Them Awesome5. Squarespace

Squarespace is an online platform which helps businesses to build a website, to create a blogging platform and as a result saves time. Now, look at the logo of this startup. Even though it is very simple (black and white, pretty ordinary typewriting), it still is a very good logo. The success is in the image before the name of the company. It is represented by few details, which perfectly fit each other.

In conclusion, we can see that it is very important for a successful logo to show the main idea of your startup. You can use associations, metaphors etc. I really hope what one day I will write a follow-up article but next time I will use your logo as the example of an awesome logo for a startup.
