StartUs Presents: Teamleader

Published on:

Jeroen De Wit, CEO at Teamleader, spoke to us about their one stop shop SaaS solutions for startups and SMEs. Learn what they are working on now and where they aim to be in 7 years time!

Describe Teamleader in 50 words or less.

Teamleader offers an integrated SaaS solution for sales, CRM, project planning, time registration and invoicing. It smoothes the entire quote-to-cash process flow. We have a multilocal approach and maintain close contact with our clients to improve the platform constantly. Thanks to the state of the art processes, SMEs turn into well-oiled teams.

But is CRM and project planning not something for stuffy corporations instead of startups?

Teamleader aims to give SME’s, but also startups, the tools and weapons of big enterprises. While stuffy corporations and startups couldn’t be more far apart, they share a common pet peeve: administrative tasks. When you’re a startup working on bringing your product to market, you should be prepared for all the growing pains of a fast growing company. You’ll quickly have more and more things keeping you from doing what you love: create, revolutionize, innovate. Trust us, we’ve been there, we’ve done that, we’ve gotten the t-shirt.

To convince you even more, we have created the Teamleader for Startups Program. Tech startups can apply for a 6-months free access to all of our modules: CRM, invoicing and project planning – with no strings attached. And because we know how quickly startups can grow, we’ve decided to grant eligible startups free usage for up to 10 users. Check out the page to find out how Teamleader can help you cut through the noise and focus on what matters: your business.

Bootstrapped or financed: What fuels your startup now and what will in the future?

So far Teamleader has had 2 funding rounds. We had a Series A round of 2.5 million euro in 2015. Fortino, a fund that invests in SaaS/Cloud technology platforms, realized the funding. We used it to develop our software further and to enter a new market, Germany. Next year, we would like to embark on another funding round to continue our growth.

In what ways do you measure your success and how do you make sure you don’t lose track?

Our single most important way of measuring success is the increasing number of SMEs that use Teamleader. To keep that number rising, we need to continue to act as a team. In the end, good teamwork always trumps individual success. Some people say you have to pamper your sales people by rewarding them when they reach their goals. We do not believe it works that way. We have no individual incentives for our salespeople but team incentives instead. There is only one team target and it counts for Teamleader as a whole. Last August, our Dutch and Belgian teams succeeded in attracting more than 100 new clients. To celebrate, we went on a 3-day trip to our brand new office in Berlin. That said, our employees each have a budget of 1,000 euro to visit one of our offices abroad.

Along with cool rewards, we strongly believe in the right attitude. Teamleader is “always on”. We are optimistic, with a ‘can do’ attitude and eager to help, in every interaction with every stakeholder. We do not power down, phase out or switch off when things get difficult. When circumstances are challenging, we switch on to solve problems and help other team members. Teamleader is also “always better”. We believe in continuous improvement through fast iteration and relentless focus. We constantly fight clutter in the Teamleader interface and engage with our clients on an eye-to-eye level so that we know how to improve our service. With our multilocal approach, we are close to our clients in every way.

Why would a talent join your team?

Since Teamleader is a very fast growing, rapidly expanding startup, opening offices in new markets every year, we are constantly looking for new employees. You get the opportunity to work on a platform that makes other startups and small firms, but even large companies work more efficiently. Let’s not forget: our clients are crazy about us!

We are an enthusiastic team of 55 men and women working towards quarterly targets. Of course, that brings us the benefit of team incentives. In addition, there are several other advantages such as hospitalization insurance and meal vouchers, but also all the tools you need to get your work done.
We want you to keep on learning. If that means you have to buy a book or go to a conference, we will support your enthusiasm. Our offices in Ghent, Amsterdam and Berlin are located close to public transport links and motorways, but also never far from the historic centre. On Fridays, we finish the week with our company wide foldup meeting in which we discuss the sales results and important announcements. And to really top of the week, we end things with our Champagne Friday

What was your most memorable moment so far?

The henQ award for best startup at The Next Web Europe conference last year is surely one of our most memorable moments. You get to see your team perform at its best and, apart from the 100,000 euro investment, it has also opened more than a few doors. Other memorable moments are conferences such as Web Summit and Slush, because you get to see your traction in real life. Some say these conferences are not worth their money, but for us they have always been an interesting way to reach new clients and talk to possible investors.

7 years from now: How did your startup change the world?

Since its foundation 3 years ago, Teamleader has grown a lot by systematically achieving its targets. We are now active in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany and are convinced that the rest of Europe will follow as well in the years to come. We are an ambitious startup and we demonstrate that ambition by continuously increasing the number of SMEs that use Teamleader.

We have similarly high ambitions for our customers. The Teamleader platform offers SMEs the services that previously could only be afforded by large enterprises. In seven years from now, Teamleader will be known as a standard for small and medium businesses. We will be a leading SME SaaS solution.
