Driving the Future of Mobility mirrors Magna’s 360° view as the only global supplier with capabilities that span the entire vehicle. The Startup Challenge involves a wide range of solutions in the automotive and mobility sector. Startups can enter with their existing solution or technology regardless of industry focus – granted that the solution is relevant and applicable.

#1 Autonomy

Innovators and startups with a technology that enables self-driving vehicles can enter the competition. Solutions include but are not limited to:

  • external and internal sensors
  • on-board embedded computing solutions
  • autonomous driving software enablers including Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions

#2 Connected Car

This challenge revolves around technologies facilitating a vehicle to communicate with other vehicles, transportation infrastructure, and cloud servers. Among others, this includes:

  • Energy management
  • Smart home services
  • Internet of Things (IoT) technologies

#3 Mobility as a Service (MaaS)

Startups on the verge of disrupting transportation business models as well as supporting technologies which do not require privately owned cars and light trucks can enter this category. MaaS focuses on solutions that are consumed as a service, including individual mobility, goods, and fleets. Solutions include but are not limited to:

  • ride-hailing
  • delivery services
  • carpooling

#4 Mobility Solutions

Solutions related to current mobility challenges are considered in this challenge. Services should offer improved quality, timing or cost of a mobility experience, some of which include:

  • car services (car sharing, parking & charging, automated driving)
  • car ownership (finance, maintenance, connected services)
  • macroeconomic aspects (city planners, energy storage, journey planning)

Autonomy, Connected Car, Mobility as a Service, and Mobility Solutions will result in four winners, receiving 7.000€ in equity-free prize money each, as well as an invite to Magna’s mentorship event on December 12 in Munich, Germany. In addition, the event, led by Ian Simmons, VP Business Development and R&D at Magna, grants winners a chance to assess if there is a fit for further project development and opportunities in the automotive industry, including the possibility to further work with Magna.
