5 Ways To Design Your Startup Logo For Success

by: Ekaterina Timofeenko

Published on: February 27, 2017

Every day hundreds of new startups are created in Europe, sometimes making it hard to keep up. So what can you do to create a logo which captures your customer's minds & stands out from the crowd?

Nowadays different logos surround us everywhere we go. Still with some logos, even if you do not see the name of the company, you can recognize it just look at its logo – and that is exactly what makes a great logo. Of course, all these companies now have millions of users all over the world. Nevertheless, they started out as startups facing one question: “What is going to be our logo?”

Check out these tips to create the perfect startup logo:

#1 Simplicity

For the last years, you may have noticed that logos have become more and more simple. It happens because there is a bigger effect behind this tactic: the fewer details a logo has the easier it is to remember the logo. Here are some examples of the simplification of different logos:

If you run a tech startup you also may think ahead: your logo will be an icon for your app and in the tech world simplification is a strong stable trend.

#2 Color Choice

If you ask someone: “Is the colour of a logo important to you?”, they likely respond that they don’t care about the colour but that they more think about the product they offer. This is partly valid. Of course, your product is important, but most of the customer perception happens on an unconscious level. In fact, the choice of a startup logo’s colour is highly important as every colour is associated with specific emotions and feelings which will be associated with your company. The latest trend in the digital world is to use as few colours as possible. Simple colour palettes actually create the sense of more colour due to the reductionist method of allowing each individual colour in the space to shine.

It is also essential to consider which market you are oriented towards, as in different cultures the perception of the same colour may be different. For example, in most countries, red is associated with passion, but in post-soviet countries, people could link it to communism. You can find a graph with colours and related emotions below:

#3 Information About Your Company

Well, logo design is important but don’t forget that first of all logo must tell your customers what you actually do. They have to understand in which industry you work and what the main idea of your business is. Let’s see some examples:

  • Instagram: We can see a small photo camera on its logo so we think that this app will be related to photos.
  • Dropbox: When we see a box on the logo we think about keeping things, which is the main idea of this company (only they use an analogy, keep your files, photos etc.)

#4 Target Appropriateness

The same importance as telling what you do to your customers is creating a logo, which will be understandable for your target audience. With a logo very different from your audience’s expectation, you might confuse them. In the end, you could risk that they can not notice your company even if your product perfectly answers their needs.

#5 Timelessness

When you are creating your startup logo don’t just think about the present but also the future. Ask yourself: “Will it still be a great logo in 10, 20, or even 50 years?”. Of course, you can slightly change your logo but it shouldn’t lose its main concept, as your customers in the future can recognize your company not only by the name but also by the logo. So, it must stay recognizable through the years and that’s why it is so important to think about it when starting today. Here is an example of Google’s logo changing (even if the typewriting can be changed or some

Here is an example of Google’s logo changing (even if the typewriting or some colours changed, we still can recognize that it is Google). Okay, maybe with Google it easy because their logo is basically his name, let’s see another example: Starbucks. We see a modification of a mermaid but still; everyone can understand that it is Starbucks.

I hope that these 5 tricks will help you create your unique startup logo. Last but not least, don’t be afraid of being inspired by your competitors. Of course, don’t copy them but just try to understand why their logos have become so popular and recognizable.

Good luck!
