StartUs Presents: laborom

We spoke to Levente Szasz, founder of laborom, about their mission to change eHealth for the better. Learn more about their purpose and goals for patients and doctors!

Describe laborom in 50 words or less.

laborom is a mobile application that helps people dealing with chronic diseases like diabetes. It’s easy to manage their condition by uploading their vital health information and making sense of them through graphs and charts.

Why did you decide to pursue your own dreams rather than someone else’s?

Everyone likes to see things improve around them. When was the last time we saw major improvement in healthcare? We all want better medicine, better hospitals, more attention from doctors; just all round better healthcare. The next question was always: who is going to do it? We believe nobody will do it for us! If we want change we have to do it ourselves – right now!

7 years from now: How did your startup change the world?

7 years from now, people around the world will use laborom to store and analyze their medical data received from the hospitals and outpatient clinics, and to connect to their smart medical devices like blood pressure meters, glucometers, weight scales, etc., and instantaneously receive their measurements in the application. Their physicians and caregivers will be able to access their data which leads to a more effective health management, better quality of life and higher cost-effectiveness. laborom will also analyze the data received and prognose health issues that may arise from their current lifestyle and recommend patients a healthier lifestyle to evade such conditions.

In what ways do you measure your success and how do you make sure you don’t lose track?

Do our users send us feedback regularly? Is our user activity – uploaded measurements, sent reports, etc. – grown since yesterday? Were we able to offer something new in our app this week? These are the questions we ask ourselves.

Describe your typical working day from coming to the office to leaving it.

Coming early – leaving late. Downtown Budapest coworking office, two screens. On the second screen: Slack and Trello windows are open constantly. These apps come along with me on my phone – always, everywhere. Lately we’ve been living quite intense days. But that’s how we like it!

Already pivoted? Did customers use the patient support application like you imagined it in the beginning?

In the beginning we set out to create an application that will store the person’s lab results and help them get the best care no matter where they are. We saw that there is large movement in the diabetes field and realized that they have very unique needs that current apps cannot fulfill, so we decided to help this community first. Not sure if you would call this a pivot; more like a deeper focus. Once we have established a definitive presence in this community we will expand into other potential markets.

Bootstrapped or financed: What fuels your startup now and what will in the future?

We started off by financing development from our own pockets, but it later became clear that we needed some more cash to speed up the job. We received an initial investment from a Hungarian accelerator, Digital Factory, who later provided us with a follow-on round.

With ferocious competition and a booming trend to build new companies: How do you make sure you don’t get lost in the shuffle?

We have a set goal: to help patients and doctors communicate better. We stick to this goal and remind ourselves each day. Everything we do has to lead us towards this goal.

What do you look for in team members?

People who don’t take themselves too seriously. Yes, we work hard, we believe in our product and the positive effects it can have on society, but we also like to have fun, have laughs while we work and go out for drinks together. We are a team inside and outside of the office. We are looking for full-scale team members, not just in the office. Liking wine is not required but is expected of all members. (:

Why would a talent join your team?

We are just cool guys to be around. (: Jokes aside: among the thousands of startups launching “Uber for cats” we actually have a true purpose that’s worth fighting for. What we are trying to achieve solves a problem for everyone around the world. Even those who join our team.

What was your most memorable moment so far?

Presenting our idea and later the final product of our hard work to patients who really need the help. We are fortunate, because this is not one moment, but a continuous stream of positive energy that we receive from our users which helps us maintain our passion, enthusiasm and love for what we do.

What advice would you give fellow founders for their startup?

Speak, speak some more, then ask, ask and ask again. The best you could do is to speak about your idea everyday to everyone you can!
