EV Fleet Management & Assessment Startup Challenge Launched

Published on:

Iberdrola’s US subsidiary AVANGRID, in collaboration with PERSEO, Iberdrola's risk capital vehicle, is launching the EV Fleet Management & Assessment Challenge to find a tool that enables fleet operators to assess the feasibility, costs, and benefits of implementing electric fleets. Applications close on 14 October 2021!

AVANGRID, Iberdrola’s US subsidiary, is committed to leading the energy transition to fight climate change and decarbonize the economy. The company sets its targets around electrifying the economy through innovation and technological advances that enable greater consumer connectivity.

AVANGRID is also committed to the electrification of the transportation sector as a key strategy for achieving long-term climate goals. It is actively supporting vehicle electrification through its “EV Charger Make-Ready” programs which have a goal of supporting over 13,000 new chargers by 2025. Additionally, AVANGRID aims to convert 60% of its own fleet, including 100% of its light-duty fleet of vehicles, to electric and other clean fuel alternatives by 2030.

Facilitating the Transition to Electric Fleets

AVANGRID operates in the states of New York, Maine, and Connecticut and has established goals to reduce emissions and make a significant impact on climate change. Currently, the transportation sector contributes a significant portion of total emissions in these states. Therefore, AVANGRID believes that the decarbonization of the sector, through electrification and alternative fuel, is an absolute necessity to achieve emissions goals.

Particularly, electric alternatives for medium and heavy-duty vehicles are expected to reach parity with internal combustion engine equivalents on acquisition costs and savings from a total cost of ownership (TCO) perspective. AVANGRID is looking to facilitate this transition for customers by providing insight and information on electrical infrastructure capacity, potential upgrade costs, and expected electricity costs.

Do You Build Tools to Improve Electric Fleet Management & Assessment?

AVANGRID, in collaboration with PERSEO, Iberdrola’s risk capital vehicle, is launching the EV Fleet Management & Assessment Challenge to find a tool, available for customer use on utility websites, that allow fleet operators to assess feasibility, costs, and benefits of converting their fleets to electric solutions.

The main characteristics of such a tool should include:

  • User-Provided Input:
    • Location Data such as address or GIS coordinates.
    • Identification of existing vehicles: make/model/year, class, use, and non-use schedules, annual mileage, and mileage range.
    • The option of uploading telematics data for each existing vehicle.
  • EV Fleet Management & Assessment Tool Output: Identification of Replacement Electric Vehicles: allows for multiple vehicle option comparison based on the users’ inputs.
  • Site Feasibility Analysis:
    • Links to utility hosting capacity maps to assess the available system capacity at the location
    • Links to utility GIS data to assess the potential need for separate utility service with a new utility service transformer or integrating into the existing services.
  • Fuel Costs & Rate Analysis:
    • Extracts rate class and usage data from existing utility accounts to automatically determine the recommended rate class for the electric fleet.
    • Calculates the estimated monthly utility bill and adjusts for seasonal changes to miles per kWh.
  • Operations & Maintenance Cost Analysis:
    • Allows fleet operators to enter existing maintenance schedules and costs by vehicle and by service period.
    • Allows fleet operators to provide vehicle replacement schedules and estimated salvage values for each vehicle, vehicle class, and/or use case.
  • Charging Infrastructure Analysis:
    • Enables fleet operators to identify required electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) by type – Level 2 or direct-current fast chargers (DCFC).
    • Informs electric fleet operators about the estimated charging times associated with each vehicle.
    • Ensures that the identified EVSE is compatible with previously identified EV replacements.
    • Provides overall infrastructure feasibility assessments with cost estimates for construction & implementation.
  • Incentives & Tax Credits: identifies and recommends any regional or local vehicle incentives, including grants, rebates, and tax incentives, as well as applicable make-ready program incentives and Federal Tax Credits.
  • Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Analysis: estimates carbon dioxide (CO2) savings and other environmental benefits.

Why You Should Apply for this Challenge

Candidates taking part in this Challenge may be individuals or entities. By winning the challenges, candidates stand the chance to:

  • Sign a collaboration agreement with AVANGRID and/or Iberdrola.
  • Add your solutions to Iberdrola’s service territory and companies within the group.
  • Scale your solution through commercial agreements facilitated by Iberdrola.
  • Receive an opportunity for investment by PERSEO.

Applications close on 14 October 2021. All proposals will be analyzed based on criteria of scalability, robustness, and ease of implementation and use by experts from the AVANGRID and Iberdrola group network. The pilot project will commence in 2021/2022.
