Studio Graphene: “We Turn Ideas Into Reality By Reinventing Existing Technology”

Published on:

Turning ideas into products, Studio Graphene considers itself one of London's finest. We spoke to founder Ritam Gandhi about competition and the role of branding and design for a startup's identity.

How would you describe Studio Graphene in a few words?

We’re Studio Graphene – ‘The Studio of Better Things’. We offer full Digital Project Management, from creative app development to web design and Internet of Things (IoT) product development. We work with a range of companies from startups to corporates like Diageo and Coca-Cola.

What inspired you to create the startup? How did it all start?

I love creating new products and ideas. Whilst working for the likes of Accenture, Capco, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, I saw some amazing tech ideas failing to happen in London‘s tech space due to a lack of delivery capability. I saw a massive opportunity to turn ideas into reality by reinventing existing technology and starting my own company to do this.

As there are a number of design studios, agencies and startups out there, the competition is fierce. What makes Studio Graphene stand out from the crowd? What is the key differentiator?

We believe we are the best place in London when it comes to delivering innovative products. Studio Graphene has a proven track record in delivering ambitious projects using existing technologies. We’ve built everything, like the first app for a circular device that is still being built to connect kitchen printers running 30-year-old technology.

What are some of the other projects you’ve worked on? What can you tell us about the process of working with you?

We’ve worked on a variety of projects, from collaborating with big brands such as Coca-Cola to helping one-man band startup founders deliver their vision.

Our delivery approach is very similar to all our projects from mobile and web apps to industrial IoT solutions. Our approach to delivering ideas encourages a lot of time being spent on clearly articulating requirements, designing and planning together with clients to ensure the process is enjoyable and successful.

Branding and design have been described as powerful tools to establish a startup’s identity. From your experience, what are the most common pitfalls in this regard?

Before branding and design, it is important to test your hypothesis and ideas as quickly as possible. From my experience, vital time is lost in people dragging their feet on branding more than they need to. Branding and design are fundamental in successfully communicating your idea. There is a balance in forming effective branding and design whilst maintaining momentum from initial tests.

What is the biggest challenge that your company has faced?

Building the best team has been the biggest challenge. Although this took time, looking back it was worth it as it is now one of our strengths.

As a UK-based startup, what do you wish for in improving the European startup ecosystem?

A much higher degree of collaboration across the various European countries, as we are actually all trying to solve the same set of challenges. Together we are stronger in our ability to address them.

What’s next for Studio Graphene?

To constantly improve our successful record of helping startups and corporates invent new products or services using technology. We are working very hard on developing intellectual property to facilitate the design and development of more blank canvas product ideas.

What’s one piece of advice you can give to fellow founders for their startup?

Learn to ride the waves, the highs will always feel higher and the lows will feel lower. Always maintain that focus on what you set out to achieve.
