Romexsoft: “Everyone Wants A Great Software Product.”

Published on:

Serhiy Kozlov, CEO of the software startup Romexsoft on why functionality alone doesn't make a great product and why the emotional aspect should be of equal value.

Describe Romexsoft in 50 words or less.

Romexsoft is a software development company, launched in 2004 in Lviv, Ukraine. At our company we’ve managed to build a unique cultural environment based on agile principles. Think of it as a lab, where product owners, teams and individuals work side by side on implementing the boldest ideas into life through commitment and passion in software development.

What is your role at Romexsoft and how did you get involved?

I’m a man of many hats: CEO & Founder, Entrepreneur, Project Manager, Software Architect. Since day one I’ve been taking an active part in improving customer satisfaction, optimizing work processes and coaching the entire team. I believe leaders shouldn’t stand aside and always take the proactive approach in company management.

7 years from now: How did your startup change the world?

I believe we’ll be credited for creating a few buzzing fintech solutions challenging the financial markets. Probably, would even take part in building software for a unicorn company. In any case, Romexsoft will continue delivering successful software projects and raising the bar in software quality and innovations.

Describe your typical working day from coming to the office to leaving it.

I’m an early-riser. Mornings are reserved for personal projects as I feel the most productive. Afterwards, I check my emails and have a few status meetings for a change. At that time I often go out to have a quick talk with the project managers and team members to see how things are going. After lunch, I continue working on personal tasks and schedule brainstorming meetings with teams. At the end of the day, I spend a few hours on routine tasks that don’t require much creativity or energy.

In what ways do you measure your success and how do you make sure you don’t lose track?

Feedback from our customers is the key KPI of our success. So far, 90% of our first-time clients become our long-term partners.

Already pivoted? Did customers use the IT outsourcing services like you imagined it in the beginning?

In most instances, yes. However, later we had to introduce rescue mission services as there were quite a number of customers coming to us with abandoned projects.

Bootstrapped or financed: What fuels your startup now and what will in the future?

Bootstrapped from the very beginning. I had some private savings, plus personal leads to win the first projects and afterwards have strategically re-invested funds into further development. We’re planning to use the same approach further on.

What were the biggest challenges you faced building your startup?

Juggling customer satisfaction, delivering high-quality services with complex requirements and implementing flexicurity principles within our organization at the same time.

With ferocious competition and a booming trend in the IT industry, how do you make sure you don’t get lost in the shuffle?

Everyone wants a great software product. That’s simple. But we believe that excellent functionality is not enough for that – your product needs to convey great emotions. That unique vibe, which makes clear that out of all people, your company had created this product.

We believe that every improvement should carry both technical and emotional value. This is the only way to build impressive products and services (and make the world a little better).

What do you look for in team members?

We have an unspoken rule to hire happy people – people who can get knocked down, but find a way to look on the bright side and dwell on it.

Why would a talent join your team?

We are young, agile and dynamic. We don’t have dragging bureaucracy or crusted corporate culture. Changes are always welcomed and easily adopted. Our organizational structure is flat and build on principles of trust, transparency and openness. Decisions are agreed, not forced upon. We build our culture around the people who work for us – and everyone are welcomed to contribute ideas and be heard.

What was your most memorable moment so far?

Our very first team building getaway – it was a great bonding experience. Meeting with new customers are also very valuable and exciting moments for me.

What advice would you give fellow founders for their startup?

Be open minded and keep going no matter what. There are rainy days, but then the sun comes out all of a sudden…and if you have a few shades stashed in your bag, it may be your prime time now.
