Tirana was founded in 1614 and proclaimed Albania’s capital in 1920, today the city is the beating heart of Albania. Having undergone a transformation of extraordinary proportions since it awoke from its communist slumber in the early 1990s, Tirana’s center is now unrecognizable, with its buildings painted in primary colors, and public squares and pedestrianized streets a pleasure to wander. Tirana is loud, crazy, colorful and dusty but one thing it is not – dull.

Exploring The Heart Of Albania

Albania is located between Western and Eastern Europe, its capital is only 30km away from the most important harbor of Albania. This position makes it possible to reach Italy with a one-night ferry (271km distance), Greece is less than 200km away, Kosovo 162km, Montenegro 106km and Macedonia 104 km.

Even though it is hard to pin down the exact number of students in Tirana, it is considered the main “bakery” of IT and economics students, without even counting those from privately held universities.
The unexplored field of startups has experienced a fast rise of interest in the last four years and the students are most eager to go in this direction, making them the perfect pool for future employees and co-founders.

The population of Albania in general and young people especially, are multilingual: English and Italian are the most spoken foreign languages among the Albanian youth; but German, French, Greek, and Spanish are not far behind.

Though the mentioned advantages make Tirana an attractive city to found in, there are a few things you should keep in mind: Albania inhabits a rather small population, counting around 3 million people. The purchasing power outside of Tirana decreases drastically. So, if you want to found your startup in Tirana it’s best to start small but think global.

One upside that comes with a dowonside is the cost of starting a business. The good news:the costs are very low: the registration at the One-Stop-Shop Business Registration Center (QKR) is only 1 EUR. The bad news: businesses (especially small ones) have to prepay tax based on expectations.

If that’s fine with you, dive into Tirana’s startup ecosystem and find out who to turn to when founding your startup:
